I think it would be hard for any TV series to live up to the books because they are just so dense (in a good way) with characters and detail that no TV show could ever hope to match it. (Equally, there are long passages of exposition that would incredibly dull if translated faithfully from page to screen.) But the job that HBO have done is indeed phenomenal – the sheer scale of ambition in terms of the number of characters and settings goes way beyond what network TV could ever hope to do.
